What is Squarespace?
Squarespace helps you build websites.
Squarespace is an all-in-one content management system, or CMS. With a single subscription, you can create a website, host your content, register domains, sell products, and much more. You can use Squarespace to build landing pages sites (single page), websites, and online stores.
How to work with text
Text is, besides killer imagery and for obvious reasons, very important.
There will most likely come a point when you’re going to want to change some wording (copy) on your website. The beauty of Squarespace is that it is super easy to do yourself.
How do I change styles and formatting?
Good question. The one important rule to keep in mind is that when you copy/paste wording into your site, is to you make sure your strip out any formatting (most likely from your .docx file).
How to work with images
Imagery is everything.
A website with bad looking images are the worst. Wha's even worse, is slow loading websites (combined with bad images). These are often caused by wrongfully uploaded images to your site. Here are a few pointers to get you started.
Make sure you own the rights (and/or are allowed to use the images) commercially.
Make sure images are exported at no more than 1MB (500kb is even better). You can use pretty much any photo editing application to help you do this. These settings can be found in the export tabs of the application you are using.
Image format of 1500x1000px. As your website is responsive (ie. it works on all devices, sweet!), Squarespace makes 7 types of files when you upload an image. That way they will work on all devices. More info can be found here.
Add alt-text to your images. This is also great for SEO (Search Engine Optimization, ie. getting higher in Google, more about this in a future post). Information about this can be found here.
Squarespace offers a wide variety of options when it comes down to blogging. The "blog" options can be used to create "news" pages or "stories". You can manipulate the blog feature in many different ways to showcase yourself and your business.
Great for SEO
The best and most important part of blogging is to keep your site "alive". When you create blogposts (or news updates), you automatically create a URL that is shareable. This means that when you post the URL on social media, your followers can read and share your post. This will work as a ripple effect as visitors that enter your website through the blog post, could be enticed to click through and visit your website ie. your business! If you're serious about your business, then get blogging!
